## Forms & parts of speech

Scientific Advertising · title

Shorthand for measurement orthodoxy.

"It's all in **Scientific Advertising** — we just renamed the coupons."

## What the book says

*Scientific Advertising* declares advertising 'salesmanship in print' that must justify itself in tracked returns, not applause. Hopkins lays out the method he ran at Lord & Thomas — keyed coupons to attribute response, one-variable tests, headlines as the ad's salesman, specific claims over superlatives, free samples as the strongest offer, and the discipline of writing to one ordinary reader rather than a crowd.

## The rules people quote

"The only purpose of advertising is to make sales"; "Almost any question can be answered, cheaply, quickly and finally, by a test campaign"; platitudes roll off — specifics stick; curiosity and self-interest move people, cleverness flatters the writer; and the preemptive claim — state the fact everyone shares but no one says, and it becomes yours (the Schlitz purity story).

## How to read it now

It is the cleanest mental reset for anyone drowning in attribution dashboards: every modern practice — A/B tests, tracked links, offer testing, landing-page specificity — appears here in 1923 dress. Its blind spots are real (brand effects it couldn't measure, a pre-broadcast world), which makes the pairing with the long-term brand literature the complete education.

**Worked example.** A growth team argues over two onboarding emails on taste. The Hopkins protocol settles it in a week — same audience split, one variable, tracked codes, the winner judged on activated accounts rather than opens. Then the bigger Hopkins move: the team writes down the result in a shared log, because his deeper invention wasn't the test — it was the accumulating record that turns opinions into a method.

**Failure modes to watch.** Testing trivia while the offer is broken; quoting 'salesmanship in print' to justify spam; and measuring everything while learning nothing because no one keeps the record.

## Origin & history

Written in 1923, reportedly drawing on Hopkins' Lord & Thomas methods under Albert Lasker. David Ogilvy's verdict made its afterlife — 'Nobody should be allowed to have anything to do with advertising until he has read this book seven times.' Long out of copyright, it circulates free.
