# Criteo: commerce media platform deep dive

Criteo started as the dominant cookie-based retargeting platform in the early 2010s. As third-party cookies declined, it rebuilt itself around commerce data — retail-media networks, first-party retailer purchase data, and a commerce-specific DSP and SSP combined into one Commerce Media Platform.

## What Criteo does today

The 2023 Iponweb acquisition completed Criteo's transition into a full-stack commerce media company. Today's Criteo offers:

- **Retargeting (legacy core).** Still operates, now relying on first-party data and identity graphs rather than third-party cookies. Performance is degraded versus the 2018 peak but still substantial for major retailers.
- **Retail Media platform.** The infrastructure layer that retailers (large grocery chains, mass merchants, specialty retailers) use to build their own retail-media networks. Criteo is the backend for many retailer-branded DSPs.
- **Commerce Media DSP.** Buyer-side platform with access to retail-media inventory across Criteo's retailer network, plus open-web commerce-relevant inventory.
- **Commerce Yield (SSP).** Acquired from Iponweb, the SSP and exchange layer that runs auctions for retail-media inventory.

## The retail-media play

Criteo's bet: retail-media is the structural answer to cookie deprecation. Retailers have first-party purchase data on their logged-in shoppers; that data is uniquely valuable for targeting and attribution. Most retailers don't have the engineering capacity to build their own DSP/SSP stack, so they license Criteo's. Criteo's clients here include some of the largest US and EU retailers; the inventory available through Criteo's commerce DSP is correspondingly large.

## When Criteo is the right choice

- You sell through major retailers (Walmart, Costco, Target, large grocery chains, big-box) and want to activate retail-media spend across their inventory.
- You run major retargeting and need a specialist platform with deeper inventory access than Google or Meta retargeting alone.
- You're a retailer building a retail-media network and don't want to build the stack from scratch.

## When Criteo isn't the right choice

- Your buy is broad open-web programmatic — TTD or [DV360](/learn/channels/dv360-platform/) have more comprehensive reach.
- You're a pure-play DTC brand with no major retailer presence and no retailer ambitions.
- Your retargeting volume is modest — [Google Ads](/learn/channels/google-ads-overview/) and [Meta Ads](/learn/channels/meta-ads-overview/) retargeting will cover smaller scales.

## The retargeting reality

Criteo's original cookie-based retargeting product was, candidly, the gold standard for performance retargeting in 2014-2018. Cookie deprecation reduced reach by 30-60% depending on geography; iOS ATT compressed it further on mobile. Criteo's response has been to rebuild on first-party data (retailer-loyalty-program identifiers, email-hash matching, identity graphs). The product still works for major retailers but is no longer the "default" retargeting choice it once was.

Is Criteo still a retargeting company?

Retargeting is one product line. The strategic positioning is Commerce Media — retail-media networks, commerce DSP, commerce SSP, and the legacy retargeting business. Criteo's leadership has been explicit that commerce media is the future direction.

How is Criteo different from a regular DSP?

Specialization. A regular DSP buys across all programmatic inventory; Criteo's commerce DSP focuses on commerce-relevant inventory and retail-media networks. For commerce-focused buyers, the specialization is valuable. For broad buyers, a general-purpose DSP covers more ground.

What retailers use Criteo's retail-media platform?

Criteo doesn't always publish the full client list publicly. Notable disclosed clients include major grocery chains, big-box retailers, and specialty retailers across the US and Europe. Many retailer-branded DSPs (the retailer's media network you see in their UI) are Criteo-powered backend.

Is Criteo's data first-party?

Criteo's commerce data is sourced from retailers who use Criteo's stack — first-party from each retailer's perspective. Aggregated across the Criteo network, the data is third-party-equivalent for buyers but built from first-party sources rather than cookie tracking. Reach is meaningful; coverage varies by category.

Should I use Criteo or run retail-media direct with each retailer?

For one or two retailers, direct retailer-DSP relationships work. For five or more, the operational overhead favors a unified platform like Criteo (or other multi-retailer aggregators). Most CPG and consumer-goods brands run a hybrid.

What's the catch with retail media in general?

Walled-garden dynamics. Each retailer's data is locked to that retailer's platform. Cross-retailer measurement is hard; incrementality is harder. The economics work because retailer-data attribution beats third-party cookie attribution by a wide margin, but the operational complexity multiplies with each retailer added.

## Operating checklist

1. Map campaign goals against platform strengths before launch.
2. Negotiate fee transparency in writing; require ANA-style supply-chain disclosure.
3. Configure pre-bid filters for IVT, viewability, and brand safety.
4. Apply supply-path optimization to reduce duplicate auctions.
5. Run weekly delivery, pacing, and quality reviews.
6. Reconcile DSP-side vs publisher-side reporting monthly.
7. Document seats, deals, owners, and lessons in a runbook your successor can read.
