# Demand-side platforms (DSPs): how the buyer's seat in programmatic works

A demand-side platform is the software an advertiser logs into to plan, bid, target, traffic, and report on programmatic media. From the operator's chair, the DSP is where the work happens. From the impression's perspective, the DSP is the buyer that submits a bid in the milliseconds between page load and ad render.

## What a DSP does in a single impression

Every time a publisher page loads, the SSP sends a bid request to every DSP it's connected to. The DSP receives the request, decides whether to bid (audience match, frequency cap not exceeded, budget available, brand-safety filters pass), calculates how much to bid (machine-learning model based on the audience and conversion-likelihood data), and returns a bid response — all in under 100 milliseconds. The winning DSP's creative serves; the others' bids are discarded.

What the DSP is actually doing in that 100ms is running the buyer's algorithms against the bid request's signals: page URL, audience identifiers, device, geo, time, and any deal IDs present. Modern DSPs evaluate millions of bid requests per second per buyer.

## How DSPs differ from each other

The four axes that actually matter when choosing a DSP:

1. **Inventory access.** Which exchanges and direct publisher connections does the DSP have? DV360 has unique YouTube access. Amazon DSP has Prime Video and unique Amazon-owned inventory. TTD has the broadest open-web access. Yahoo's CTV connections are strong.
2. **Audience and identity.** Which identity graphs are supported? UID2, RampID, ID5, Yahoo ConnectID, the Google identity graph — each DSP supports some subset. If your first-party data is already onboarded to a specific identity graph, the DSP that supports it wins.
3. **Bidding intelligence.** DSPs differ in the sophistication of their bidding algorithms. TTD's Koa and Kokai, DV360's automated [bidding strategies](/learn/tactics/bidding-strategies/), Amazon's Sponsored Display optimization — each has different strengths. For most buyers, this matters less than #1 and #2.
4. **Reporting and integration.** Native integration with ad servers, attribution tools, and data warehouses. DV360 integrates smoothly with CM360 and GA4. TTD has the most mature data-warehouse export. Amazon's reporting is the most retail-focused.

## What a DSP seat actually costs

The pricing models vary. Most DSPs charge a tech fee on media spend, ranging from 10-20%. Some have minimum-spend commitments (TTD commonly $50K/quarter for managed-service, lower for self-serve). Self-serve seats are usually available without minimums but with reduced support. Agencies often have negotiated rates significantly below the public rate card.

## Self-serve vs managed-service

Self-serve: the buyer logs in directly and runs campaigns. Lower tech fee, no platform-side support, requires in-house programmatic expertise. Managed-service: the DSP's trading desk runs campaigns on the buyer's behalf. Higher tech fee, includes optimization and reporting, requires less in-house expertise. Most enterprise buyers use a hybrid — self-serve for ongoing campaigns, managed-service for specialized work like CTV upfronts or international expansion.

## Common operational mistakes

- Running on every supply path the DSP is connected to. Supply-path optimization (SPO) typically reduces the number of SSP hops to 2-4 trusted ones, eliminating duplicate auctions and reducing fees.
- Not setting pre-bid filters. Without DV/IAS/Moat filters configured, brand-safety incidents land in your campaign and you pay the catch-up cost.
- Setting frequency caps at the line-item level only. Set caps at the campaign level (across all lines) and at the audience level (across all campaigns targeting the same audience) to prevent over-exposure.
- Ignoring the DSP's recommended bid range. The DSP's bidding model knows what's working; overriding it manually usually costs performance.
- Reporting on the DSP's last-click attribution. Run [incrementality testing](/learn/measurement/incrementality-testing-guide/) as a parallel discipline; DSP last-click systematically over-credits retargeting.

Can I run campaigns across multiple DSPs?

Yes, and many large advertisers do. The cost is operational complexity: managing audiences, frequency caps, and creative across multiple platforms. The benefit is access to inventory or audience data that one DSP doesn't have. Common pattern: DV360 for YouTube and Google ecosystem, TTD for the open web and CTV, Amazon DSP for retail-data activation.

How is DSP bidding different from Google Ads bidding?

[Google Ads](/learn/channels/google-ads-overview/) bids on Google's owned-and-operated inventory (search, YouTube, Discovery) plus the [Google Display Network](/learn/channels/google-display-network/). A DSP bids on the open programmatic web — thousands of publishers, multiple CTV platforms, native exchanges, etc. The DSP is a broader buying tool; Google Ads is a deeper buying tool inside Google's ecosystem.

What does "cookieless" mean for DSPs?

It means the DSP's bidding model can't rely on third-party cookies for user identity. The replacements are identity graphs (UID2, RampID), contextual signals (page content, video metadata), CTV household-level identifiers, and the Privacy Sandbox APIs in Chrome. Every major DSP has reorganized around these signals; the older cookie-based targeting workflows are deprecated.

Can a DSP plug into my CDP?

Yes, via direct integrations or LiveRamp/Snowflake clean-rooms. Direct integrations exist for most major CDPs (Salesforce, Adobe, Segment, mParticle). The cleaner pattern is to land the audience in your data warehouse (Snowflake or BigQuery), then activate via the DSP's data-clean-room connector — that keeps the audience definitions versioned and auditable.

Is Amazon DSP a real DSP?

Yes. It buys across the open web (Amazon Publisher Services exchange), Amazon-owned inventory (Prime Video, IMDb TV, Twitch, Amazon.com display), and increasingly third-party CTV inventory. The differentiator is Amazon's first-party purchase data — uniquely available only on Amazon DSP.

Are there any new DSPs worth watching?

In CTV specifically: NBCUniversal's One Platform, Disney's DRAX, and Warner Bros Discovery's WBD Stream offer DSP-like capabilities for their owned inventory. Roku's OneView is the open-web-equivalent for Roku-platform buying. These aren't full DSPs by classical definition but they're where significant CTV spend now flows.

## Operating checklist

1. Define the desired outcome before opening a platform UI.
2. Validate platform fit against budget, geo, and inventory access needs.
3. Set frequency caps, viewability floors, and IVT filters at line-item launch.
4. Run a controlled holdout to measure incrementality, not last-click.
5. Review pacing, viewability, and brand-safety reports weekly.
6. Reconcile delivery against publisher-side reporting monthly.
7. Document seat IDs, deal IDs, contacts, and lessons learned in a runbook.
